Escambia Bay Emergency Repairs

The twin, 13,000-foot-long bridges of Interstate 10 across Escambia Bay, just east of Pensacola, Florida, were severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan. This design-build emergency repair project was accomplished in two phases:

Phase I: To restore two-way traffic on one bridge, 19 roadway sections were realigned; 12 roadway sections were taken from the second bridge and placed on this bridge; and seven new piers were fabricated and installed. The 60-foot by 35-foot integral beam and slab roadway sections weighed 250 tons. The replacement bents were twin W36 x 300 girders, up to 50 feet long, supported on four 36-inch-diameter by 160-foot-long pipe piles. Two-way traffic was restored in 17 days, seven days ahead of this phase's contract requirement.

Phase II: To restore traffic on the second bridge, 43 roadway sections were realigned; 25 new piers fabricated and installed; and 3,720 LF of Acrow Bridge was installed to span the open sections left by Hurricane Ivan. During this phase, 45 roadway sections and 25 concrete piers were removed from the bay, transported to shore, and demolished for offsite disposal. This phase was completed 63 days after notice to proceed, four weeks ahead of its contract date.
