CHRISTOPHER S. BOND BRIDGE

Bridges

The kcICON Project reconstructed and rehabilitated 4.7 miles of the Interstate 29/35 corridor just north of downtown Kansas City, Missouri. This project added capacity to a busy corridor in order to better serve its 100,000+ daily users. A key feature of the project was the state-of-the-art Christopher S. Bond Bridge over the Missouri River, that replaced the existing suspension bridge. The Missouri Department of Transportation awarded this design–build contract to the Paseo Corridor Constructors joint venture as a result of a Best Value RFP.

Within the joint venture, Massman was directly responsible for managing the design and construction of the signature cable-stayed bridge from abutment to abutment, while our joint venture partners focused on the 4+ miles of roadway widening and interchange reconstruction adjacent to the bridge. The bridge has a 1,002-foot-long cable-stayed segment, as well as approach spans that total 715 feet. The 314-foot-tall delta shaped pier supports a 145-foot-wide bridge deck that carries six lanes of traffic across the river.

The bridge is a composite structural steel and concrete superstructure, utilizing high strength steel and high performance concrete (HPC) for durability and structural efficiency for a design life of 75 years. The stays are comprised of individual high strength post-tensioning strands individually sheathed and enclosed in an HDPE pipe sleeve. The strands are tensioned to a precise loading to obtain the optimum bridge profile under traffic conditions. The main pylon was founded on 8 each, 11-foot-diameter shafts, with the base drilled into the native shale stone strata. The approach pier columns are also founded on drilled shafts. After opening the new bridge to traffic, Massman self-performed the majority of the demolition of the existing suspension bridge, the substructure of which Massman completed in the 1950s.
