The I-10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Widening Project, estimated at $3.7 billion, is set to begin by the end of this year, following a $550 million federal grant. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion by constructing a new 2.5-mile cable-stayed bridge and replacing over 7 miles of bridges across Mobile Bay, while reconfiguring seven interchanges.
Initially proposed in the 1990s, the project faced delays due to public opposition to high tolls but was revived with a capped toll of $2.50 per car. In 2023, a joint venture led by Kiewit Infrastructure South Co., Massman Construction Co., and Traylor Bros., Inc. (KMT) was originally selected to construct the river bridge and approaches. KMT has now taken over the entire project.
Preconstruction activities will start this summer, with hopes for a groundbreaking by the end of 2025. The new bridge will provide essential capacity improvements and accommodate shipping traffic, with a commitment from Alabama Governor Kay Ivey to eliminate tolls once project loans are repaid.
