MARATHON PETROLEUM TERMINAL EXPANSION

Mt. Airy, Louisiana

The MPLX Mt. Airy Dock 2 project is a marine terminal expansion consisting of a combination ship and barge dock with an additional inshore barge berth. Located on the Lower Mississippi River, the facility is capable of servicing both large ocean-going vessels and inland waterways barges. The project’s scope of work consisted of pile driving, structural steel erection, cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete, mechanical, and electrical work.

The project leveraged Massman’s extensive marine construction experience and specialized equipment fleet to fast-track a schedule critical facility. Working as the CMAR contractor, Massman offered beneficial input on the finalization of the design, completed all structural scope, and procured and managed the specialty subcontractor work in an open and collaborative manner. During the preconstruction phase, Massman proposed and helped to develop a plan to accelerate construction by utilizing a modular construction approach that took advantage of Massman’s unique heavy lift cranes to provide a cost and schedule savings to the project owner.

Working through impacts from historically high water on the Mississippi, COVID-19, and six named hurricanes or tropical storms, Massman successfully delivered the project to the Owner in a safe and controlled manner.
